{"id":409,"date":"2022-05-30T09:36:15","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T09:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/frankcarolan.com\/TheTown\/?page_id=409"},"modified":"2022-05-30T09:36:15","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T09:36:15","slug":"dfc-magazine-a-season-to-remember","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/frankcarolan.com\/TheTown\/dfc-magazine-a-season-to-remember\/","title":{"rendered":"DFC Magazine: A season to remember."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1995, Dundalk FC won the league title on the final day of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took on Galway United in Oriel Park on April 23<sup>rd<\/sup> 1995, with Dundalk, Shelbourne and Derry City all in the mix to be crowned League of Ireland Champions, Derry being the favourites, so much so that the newly unopened league trophy was in Athlone with many expecting Derry to be crowed champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October of that season, the club was on the verge of ceasing trading and under the management of club legend Dermot Keely, results on the pitch reflected the mood off it with the team collecting draws for fun, we languished mid table for the majority of the season, but with results starting to improve in the latter end of the season and with the team starting to gel, we began to climb up the league table to bring the league to the final day of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all came down to a home game in Oriel against Galway United that we simple had to win by two goals or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We won that game 2-0 with the final goal scored by Tom Mc Nulty who slotted the ball home to seal the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the full-time whistle blew the crowds gathered on the Oriel Park turf waiting for results from the other games to filter through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derry had drawn against Athlone, Shelbourne drew against St. Pats, Dundalk were Champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/talkofdatown.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/1995-team.jpg\" alt=\"Dundalk FC to honour 1995 league winning team | Talk of the Town\"\/><figcaption>The Dundalk FC 1994 \/ 1995 League Champtions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A season that started with uncertainty, with the club fighting off closure, with new management, new players in the team needing to gel together and results not going our way, we managed to build a league challenge and secure the League of Ireland title on the last day of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Football is like that, its why we love the games so much, if you believe that you can achieve something, if you stay positive and put in the hard work, anything is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of similarities from that 1994 \/ 1995 season to the current one, we have a new management team, we have a squad that is in the process of gelling together and we have emerged as a club from a period of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result against Derry on Friday night in the Brandywell would have sent shockwaves throughout the league, it would have made other teams take notice, <strong><em>Dundalk haven\u2019t gone away you know<\/em><\/strong>, we are third in the league with a game in hand, and with tonight\u2019s game against St Pats on the cards, a win tonight and we have our sights firmly locked on Derry and Shamrock Rovers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Football is a funny old game, <strong><em>apologies for the cliche<\/em><\/strong>, anything is possible, but only if you believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe its time we started to believe in ourselves again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019mon The Town!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1995, Dundalk FC won the league title on the final day of the season.
